Reflections script - Act 6 (The Young Riders)

ACT 6

FADE IN

33. Ext. Terrain Camp – a few hours later

We pan around the fire to see that all the riders now appear to be asleep. As we shift to the surrounding bushes we see a pair of eyes peaking through. The bushes separate revealing the eyes of Genevieve watching the sleeping riders. She pushes her way through the bushes and slowly walks up to The Kid reaching down for his canteen. As she comes within reach a hand grabs her arm and she tries to pull away. Zoom out showing the The Kid has grabbed her arm.

34. Ext. Camp Fire – minutes later

The scene shifts to Genevieve sitting on the ground surrounded by the riders.

THE KID

What the hell are you doing here?

GENEVIEVE

I told you I wasn’t staying there.

CODY

Do you want to die?

GENEVIEVE

I’m not afraid to die.

THE KID

Did you forget why Lou went through all of this?

GENEVIEVE

You all want to play hero and save her, that’s fine! I have my brother and
sister to think about.

THE KID

You’re one stubborn girl!

NOAH

Remind you of anyone?

Rustling from the trees around them cause all the riders to turn their attention away from Genevieve. All four draw as a figure appears from the bushes.

CODY

Buck?

BUCK

There’s no time to make camp. They’re moving them first thing in the morning.

THE KID

What happened?

Pause.

BUCK

Lou’s been shot. They’re holding her and Jimmy at the jail.

All the riders turn to their bedrolls and begin grabbing their things and re-saddling their horses. The attention turns to Genevieve.

THE KID

You’re going back.

GENEVIEVE

No, I’m not.

THE KID

We’ve already got enough to worry about. We don’t need you to add to it.

GENEVIEVE

I can take care of myself.

The Kid lets out a growl under his breath. The camera pans to Cody and Noah.

CODY

(to Noah)

Is this what the French would call de ja vu?

NOAH

I can see why Lou likes her.

Camera pans back to The Kid and Genevieve.

TEASPOON

We don’t have time. Buck, you’re gonna keep an eye on her. Let’s go.

All the riders mount up and head out into the dark night.

35. Int. Sheriff’s office – same time

We can make out Mackenzie asleep in his desk chair. Zoom in on Lou and Jimmy in the cells. Close up on Jimmy as he whispers in Lou’s ear.

JIMMY

Lou, you need to hold on. They’re coming.

Lou gently nods her head, but keeps her eyes closed. Camera pans down to Jimmy holding her hand once again.

36. Ext. Outside of Willow Springs – later that night

We see the riders approach the outskirts of town and dismount. They hand the reigns of the horses to Genevieve.

THE KID

When you see that we have Lou and Jimmy you ride up with the horses.

You don’t do anything else, you hear me?

Genevieve nods.

GENEVIEVE

What about Amanda and Billy?

CODY

I’ll get them.

Genevieve again nods.

GENEVIEVE

(to Cody)

Room 213.

The riders separate drawing their guns and heading into town. Noah, The Kid, Teaspoon and Buck all head in the direction of the office while Cody moves towards the hotel. The camera focuses on the riders heading toward the office. Teaspoon motions to Buck and Noah to head around to the back and he and The Kid head for the front.

37. Int. Sheriff’s office – same time

Jimmy is trying to stay awake as he holds on to Lou’s hand, but his eyes keeping opening and closing. Suddenly, his attention is grabbed by a sound coming from the wall behind him. He puts down Lou’s hand and slides to the back of the cell. Through the cracks we hear Buck’s voice.

BUCK

Jimmy, we’re coming in. Stay down. If you can hear this, knock on the wall.

Jimmy stares straight ahead not trying to bring too much attention to himself as he lightly raps on the wall behind him. Jimmy slides back to Lou.

JIMMY

(whispering)

Lou, they’re here. Hold on.

38. Ext. Sheriff’s Office – same time

The Kid and Teaspoon have positioned themselves on opposite sides of the door as Noah and Buck stay on opposite sides of the building. The Kid and Teaspoon push their way in.

39. Int. Sheriff’s Office – same time

The Kid and Teaspoon come in the front door. Mackenzie is knocked awake from his desk.

MACKENZIE

What’s going on here, Hunter?

The Kid grabs the keys and holsters from the wall keeping his gun still trained on Mackenzie.

TEASPOON

We’re taking them out of here.

MACKENZIE

They’re my prisoners.

THE KID

Not anymore.

The Kid runs over to the bars and unlocks Jimmy handing him his gun and holster. The Kid then unlocks Lou’s cell and picks her up from the cot.

THE KID

Lou? Open your eyes. Lou?

No response.

The Kid carries her out of the cell with Jimmy right behind him as Teaspoon puts Mackenzie in the cell. The Kid gets no more than 2 feet away from the bars when a shot comes through the front window and hits him in his arm. He does his best to hold on to Lou. Jimmy comes to his aide picking her up from his arms

Teaspoon and The Kid lead the way firing outside as Jimmy follows behind carrying Lou. The gunshots are coming from different buildings around the town. They do their best to aim where they think the shots are coming from. They get to the side of the building with Buck covering them.

40. Int. Hotel – same time

Cody can hear the gunshots from the hallway. He bursts into Room 213 with his gun drawn. He finds Billy and AMANDA sitting on the bed. Billy is shielding her from the sounds of the gunshots, but quickly draws his pistol and aims at Cody.

BILLY

Who are you?

CODY

I’m friends with your sister.

Billy nods his head as both he and Cody re-holster their weapons. Cody kneels down to the bed beside Amanda.

AMANDA

Where is Genny?

CODY

I’ll take you to her.

AMANDA

(pointing to the window)

All the shooting.

Cody walks to the window and looks out. Billy covers Amanda’s ears again.

41. Ext. Sheriff’s Office – same time

Genevieve is riding out to the front of the Sheriff’s office with the horse. Buck, Noah and Teaspoon head out toward her. They end up killing the two shooters across the way. Finally the shooting seems to stop.

Buck is the first to mount. Jimmy and Noah slowly mount Lou up in front of Buck. Cody exits the hotel with Billy carrying Amanda right behind him. Genevieve sees them coming out as The Kid and Teaspoon mount up.

GENEVIEVE

(smiling)

Amanda!

AMANDA

Genny!

GENEVIEVE

Billy!

BILLY

Gen!

Billy runs up to her mount and saddles Amanda up in front of her. Genevieve snuggly hugs Amanda as Billy then walks to the front of the group.

BILLY

You all need to get outta here.

TEASPOON

(pointing to The Kid and Lou)

We can’t go anywhere with these two. They need a doctor, now!

Billy nods and points off to a building on the corner of town.

BILLY

The doc’s office is…

A shot rings out and Billy falls to the ground. Amanda and Genevieve scream his name. Another shot rings out as we see Mackenzie, with gun in hand, fall dead onto the wooden planks of the porch outside of the Sheriff’s office. Jimmy re-holsters his pistol. Genevieve jumps down from her mount as Amanda watches on in fear.

GENEVIEVE

Billy?!

Genevieve places her hand on Billy’s chest. Billy doesn’t move. Genevieve shakes him, but it does nothing, he is dead. Jimmy approaches Genevieve helping her to her feet. She turns her attention to Jimmy.

GENEVIEVE

(coldly)

We need to get Lou to the doc.

Jimmy nods to her.

Genevieve mounts up behind Amanda (who is crying), wraps her arms around her and kicks her horse into a gallop toward the doctor with the other riders close behind.

Reflections script - Act 7 (The Young Riders)

ACT 7

FADE IN

42. Int. Doctor’s Office – sunrise

All the riders are sitting outside. Genevieve is hugging Amanda who is still obviously upset. Jimmy is sitting beside her. The rest of the riders are scattered waiting for any word from the doctor. The door opens and the DOCTOR comes out rubbing the blood from his hands.

DOCTOR

They’re both going to be alright. The young lady lost a lot of blood, but she is very lucky she didn’t get any internal damage. If I can keep getting fluids into
her she should be fine. The other young man is with her now.

Relief spreads through the riders. Genevieve whispers something to Amanda, stands up and steps off of the porch. Jimmy follows her.

JIMMY

Where are you going?

GENEVIEVE

To take my brother’s body to the Undertaker.

JIMMY

I’ll help.

Genevieve turns as if she is going to protest, but shakes her head in agreement instead. He puts his hand on her shoulder as they walk out of the shot.

43. Ext. Doctor’s Office – a week later

Lou comes out of the office with her arm in a sling as Jimmy and The Kid come out from behind her. She takes a seat on the bench. The Kid sits beside her.

LOU

You two could have gone back to Rock Creek with the others.

THE KID

And leave you here all alone?

JIMMY

Besides, Gen needed some help settling things.

LOU

How is she?

Jimmy looks off into the distance and gets quiet. We follow his gaze to Genevieve who is approaching the group with Amanda close behind.

GENEVIEVE

You look much better, Lou.

LOU

Thanks. How are you doing?

Genevieve shrugs as Amanda puts her arms around her.

THE KID

Is there anything we can do?

GENEVIEVE

No. Everything is all packed up and we’re heading out.

JIMMY

Where you going?

GENEVIEVE

Not sure. I guess we’ll know when we get there.

Lou stands up and approaches her.

LOU

Can we talk for a second?

Genevieve nods as they begin to walk away from the small group. We see Jimmy kneel down to Amanda and start talking to her in the background.

LOU

You could always come back to Rock Creek with us. I’m sure we could
find you work and give you a place to stay for a while.

GENEVIEVE

Thanks for the offer Lou, but I think we need to get as far away from this
place as possible and start over.

LOU

Make me a deal.

(Pause)

Think about what I said about no saloon work. I want you to be able to look
in the mirror and be proud of what you see. You deserve that.

Genevieve takes a second but reluctantly nods in agreement.

GENEVIEVE

Thanks Lou; for everything.

Lou and Genevieve hug. They soon pull away and walk back to Amanda and the two boys.

GENEVIEVE

It’s time to go, Amanda.

Amanda hugs Jimmy and The Kid then runs over to the awaiting horse. Genevieve helps her mount and mounts behind her. Lou approaches them and puts her hand on Genevieve’s leg.

LOU

Stay safe.

Genevieve nods as she kicks her horse into a gallop.

JIMMY

Don’t worry, Lou. She can take care of herself.

LOU

I know.

THE KID

That is one tough girl.

LOU

(almost in a whisper)

She’s not as tough as you think.

The shot pulls out as the riders watch Genevieve ride away. The camera pans around focusing on the two girls as they ride off out of town.

END OF ACT 7

Reflections script - Act 5 (The Young Riders)

ACT 5

FADE IN

24. Ext. Terrain – a short time later

Three horses make their way down the trail and begin to slow down. As they stop we see Genevieve, Cody and Buck slowing down to a halt.

BUCK

They should have caught up to us by now. I’m going back.

GENEVIEVE

I’m going with you.

BUCK

Take her back to Rock Creek. Tell Teaspoon what happened.

GENEVIEVE

I’m going with you.

CODY

We need to get you away from Mackenzie. We’ll come back for them.

Genevieve refuses to move.

BUCK

They risked their lives to make sure you got to safety. You owe it to them to go back to Rock Creek.

Genevieve reluctantly nods her agreement. Buck descends in the opposite direction as Cody and Genevieve ride off toward Rock Creek.

25. Int. Sheriff’s Office – late morning

Close up on Jimmy who is still unconscious on a cot in one of the jail cells. He begins to awaken gaining his vision slowly. He turns his view to the cell beside him. The camera pulls out to show Lou unconscious in the opposite cell. Jimmy jumps out of his cot, catching himself from falling and kneels down to the bars. He grabs her hand. Close up on her wounds revealing a gun shot to her left shoulder and right side. Close up on his hand picking up hers.

JIMMY

Lou? Lou. You need to wake up.

No response.

JIMMY

Lou. Can you hear me?

We see Lou begin to stir in the cot. She slowly opens her eyes.

JIMMY

Hey there. How are you feeling?

LOU

How do I look?

JIMMY

Great.

LOU

You’re a bad liar.

JIMMY

(to the onlookers)

He needs a doctor!

MACKENZIE

No she doesn’t.

JIMMY

If she doesn’t get to a doctor she could die.

MACKENIE

Good, one less prisoner to transport to Ft. Kearney tomorrow.

JIMMY

We’re not your prisoners.

MACKENZIE

Oh, yes you are. Helping a prisoner escape is punishable by death.

JIMMY

Fine, bring us to trial, but get her to a doctor. As a prisoner she has the right to a doctor.

MEMBER #2

He’s right Mac. I can go get the doc right now.

MACKENZIE

No Billy, I said no doctor!

Billy walks to the door.

MACKENZIE

No doctor!

BILLY

I’m not getting the doc. I just need some fresh air.

Billy exits the office. We watch as he walks off of the front steps and to the side of the building. A hand reaches for him and pulls him out of view. The camera rounds the corner showing Buck holding his gun on Billy.

26. Int. Rock Creek Marshal’s office. – same time

Teaspoon is sitting at his desk writing. We turn to the front door as The Kid and Noah enter.

THE KID

Teaspoon, I don’t have a good feeling.

TEASPOON

Now there is no reason to go worrying yourself. I told you, I just sent the others
to give them something to do.

THE KID

Something’s wrong, I know it.

NOAH

Teaspoon’s right. There isn’t anything to worry about. They’re all probably bored
out of their minds wandering the trails to Fort Kearney right now. Cody’s annoying
everyone with his singing and the rest are deciding who gets to shoot him.

THE KID

(chuckling)

I’m sure Lou would be the first to volunteer.

They both smile.

27. Ext. Sheriff’s office – same time

The scene picks up where it left off. Buck is holding his gun on Billy as he is pushed against the office wall.

BUCK

What happened to my friends?

BILLY

Mac’s holding them in the office. He has them both locked up. The girl’s hurt pretty bad.

BUCK

How bad?

BILLY

She took a couple of hits. Where’s my sister?

BUCK

Your sister?

BILLY

Genevieve. Where is she?

BUCK

She’s on her way back to Rock Creek. If she’s your sister why are you helping the sheriff?

BILLY

He doesn’t know who I am. I left right after my father died. When I came back I was told
Genny was in big trouble and they were sending I posse out for her. I figured if I joined
I could protect her.

Buck re-holsters his gun.

BUCK

She’s riding back now. Marshal Hunter will come with help.

BILLY

They better get here soon. Mackenzie wants to head out to Ft. Kearney first thing tomorrow morning.

Buck pulls a note from his pocket.

BUCK

Can you get a message to them?

Billy nods. Buck hands him the note which Billy reads to himself. Again he nods and quickly leaves Buck. Billy returns to the office.

MACKENZIE

Where did you go?

BILLY

I told you I needed some fresh air.

Billy goes to the water bucket. Scooping out some water he takes a sip.

BILLY

(to Jimmy)

She looks thirsty.

Jimmy continues to stare at Lou.

BILLY

Some water might help.

Billy scoops out another mug of water and brings it over to the bars. Close up on Billy’s hand where we can see a small piece of paper protruding from under the mug. Jimmy stands up taking both the mug and paper from Billy. Jimmy puts the paper in his pocket as he places the mug through the bars and to Lou’s lips. She takes a sip of the water. Jimmy puts the mug off to the side. Billy takes a seat on one of the office chairs.

28. Ext. Rock Creek Main Street – late afternoon

Two riders make their way down the rocky street at top speed. They come to a stop in front of the Marshal’s office. Both riders dismount and head into the office. The camera follows them in. The Kid, Noah and Teaspoon all jump to their feet.

TEASPOON

What happened?

CODY

Lou was right. Sheriff Mackenzie’s a fake. He was looking for an opportunity to kill Genevieve

THE KID

Where’s Lou?

CODY

I’m not sure. Jimmy and Lou got separated from us. Buck’s still there trying to find them.

The Kid walks to the door.

NOAH

Kid wait.

THE KID

I knew I should have ridden out last night. I’m not waiting anymore.

GENEVIEVE:

I’m coming with you.

TEASPOON

No, you’re not. Why does Mackenzie want you dead?

GENEVIEVE

I watched Buford kill a man and Mackenzie helped cover it up.

TEASPOON

So you killed him in self-defense?

Genevieve nods.

TEASPOON

Then you need to stay here. If you can testify against Mackenzie there is no way
you’re going back there.

GENEVIEVE

I’m not staying here. Lou believed in me. If something happened to her I’m going.
Besides, my brother and sister are there too.

TEASPOON

Where are they?

GENEVIEVE

My sister is at the hotel probably scared out of her mind. She watched Buford take
me away. My brother was part of the posse that came looking for me. He came to
help. It’s always been just the three of us. Nobody else cared, until Lou.

THE KID

If Lou was protecting you, it was for a good reason. She would want you to stay out
of harm’s way. But I’m going after them.

The Kid exits the office.

TEASPOON

Alright, you two go with him and take Genevieve to the station with you. Let Rachel
know what’s going on. I’ll get Barnett to watch the office and I’ll meet you at the
edge of town.

29. Ext. Edge of Rock Creek – 20 minutes later

Teaspoon rides up to the three awaiting riders. They trot into a gallop riding out of town.

30. Int. Station Bunkhouse Doorway – minutes later

We see Genevieve looking out from the doorway. She slowly sneaks out from the bunkhouse heading in the direction of the stables dressed in slacks and a white button down shirt.

31. Ext. Terrain – night

The riders have built a fire and laid out their bedrolls around it. Teaspoon and The Kid are wide awake as Noah and Cody appear to be fast asleep.

TEASPOON

Kid, you need to get some rest.

THE KID

We both know that’s not gonna happen.

TEASPOON

There’s nothing to worry about until there’s something to worry about.

THE KID

Where are Lou and Jimmy? That’s something to worry about.

TEASPOON

We’ll find them, Kid.

Close up on The Kid’s face as the camera blends out of focus.

32. Int. Sheriff’s office – that night

Blurred close up pulls out to reveal a sweat soaked Lou. Camera pulls out more as we now see Jimmy wiping the sweat from her face. He looks out to those outside of the cell. He appears defeated and hopeless.

END OF ACT 5

Reflections script - Act 4 (The Young Riders)

ACT 4

FADE IN

13. Ext. Wooded Area Outside of Camp – minutes later

We see the Posse Member has pulled her to the wooded area not too far from their camp site. Throwing her on the ground he holds out the knife.

MEMBER

Now we’re going to be nice and quiet or I’ll gut you. Understand?

She nods her head in understanding as he gets down on his knees in front of her. He places himself on top of her. Close up on her face as a tear escapes her eye. From behind him, two hands reach out grabbing his shirt. Pan wide showing Jimmy has pulled the Posse Member off of Genevieve and punches him in the face. Jimmy removes the knife from Posse Member’s hand as we hear the cocking of a gun in the distance. Pull back again to reveal Posse Member #2 holding a gun on Jimmy. From behind him the rest of the riders rush up.

MACKENZIE

What the hell is going on here?

Jimmy approaches Genevieve who is obviously distraught and helps her to her feet.

JIMMY

I think you need to keep a tighter leash on your men or they might wind up dead.

Lou approaches Jimmy and Genevieve putting her arm around her as they both help her out of the woods leaving everyone watching.

14. Ext. Terrain around the fire – a few minutes later

Lou and Genevieve are sitting together as the others are huddled in two separate groups (the posse and the Express riders) away from them. Jimmy approaches the two and hands Genevieve a tin cup of water.

GENEVIEVE

Why are you being so nice to me?

LOU

You seem like a girl in trouble.

JIMMY

No woman deserves to be treated that way by any man.

GENEVIEVE

I wish that were true. I’ve dealt with that most of my life.

LOU

Why didn’t you leave?

GENEVIEVE

Didn’t have much of a choice. My Pa died from the fever about a year ago.
We didn’t have any money. My brother left to try to find work and he would
send money home sometimes, but it was never enough. We needed the money
bad, so I went to our fair Sheriff to find a job and he sent me in the direction of
the saloon. Said I could make a lot of money. See, Sheriff Buford was a
gambler and a lady’s man. He eventually became my best customer.

LOU

What happened in that field?

GENEVIEVE

A week before you found me I was supposed to meet him at his office for my
nightly visit. I was passing the stables in town when I overheard someone yelling inside.
I walked up to the stable doors and heard Buford yelling at another man. He was
yelling about a poker game. Things went from yelling to a scuffle so I peeked inside.
I watched Sheriff Buford choke that man to death.

JIMMY

Why didn’t you tell anyone?

GENEVIEVE

I did. I went to Deputy Mackenzie and told him the whole story.

Who do you think told Sheriff Buford I saw him? Buford locked me in a cell the night before he took me out there. I overheard him and Mackenzie talking about getting rid of the body and that I was going to be the next one to go. That’s why he took me out there that morning. As soon as he took his eyes off me I grabbed his gun and shot him. That’s why Mackenzie wants me dead now.

LOU

We’re gonna get you away from them.

JIMMY

How do you plan on doing that?

LOU

I’ll think of something.

15. Ext. Terrain – next morning

Everyone is on horse back. The Express riders are riding to the rear as the five posse members ride in the front with Genevieve in between both groups. Close up on the Express riders.

BUCK

Why don’t we just leave it for a judge to decide?

LOU

They are never gonna let her get to that trial. If we don’t get her away
from them soon she’ll be dead before we ever reach Ft. Kearney.

CODY

How do you know that?

LOU

She watched Buford kill a man and Mackenzie helped him cover it up.
If she testifies he goes to jail.

JIMMY

Mackenzie won’t let that happen.

CODY

I hope this plan of your works.

LOU

All I know is if he gets her past Willow Springs, she’s dead.

Pan out as we watch the riders nod their heads in agreement to the plans. Pan out to again reveal all the riders.

16. Ext Express Station – late morning

We watch as two riders ride into the station. Camera follows THE KID and NOAH as they ride up to the stables.

17. Int. Bunkhouse – minutes later

The Kid and Noah enter the bunkhouse to find Jesse sitting at the table playing solitaire and eating a sandwich. He looks up to the two incoming riders.

THE KID

Where is everybody?

JESSE

Not sure. I know Rachel’s in town picking up supplies. Haven’t seen anyone else.

NOAH

That sandwich looks mighty good.

JESSE

(smiling)

Tastes good too.

THE KID

I figured we would get a warmer reception than this.

JESSE

Rachel said she should be back in a little while.

NOAH

Mind if I get a small piece of that sandwich?

Jesse breaks off a bite of the sandwich and hands it to him. Noah is obviously disgruntled at the small piece he is given, but is too tired to argue.

THE KID

Noah, you’re starting to sound like Cody. Don’t you think it’s a little strange
for the station to be empty like this?

NOAH

Kid, strange or not. I’m ready for nap. Besides, if something was going on
Teaspoon would tell us.

Noah lies down on his bunk.

THE KID

I’m not that tired. I think I’m gonna wait for Rachel on the porch.

Enjoy your nap.

The Kid exits as Noah shakes his head and places his hat over his face. Jesse goes back to his solitaire game.

18. Ext. Path to Willow Springs – afternoon

The group is still split between Express Riders and posse members. Lou and Genevieve are discussing the upcoming escape plan as the tension between the two groups continues to mount.

LOU

You understand how this is gonna work?

GENEVIEVE

Yea.

LOU

Are you okay with it?

GENEVIEVE

It’s not any different than what I’ve been doing.

LOU

You know, there are other things you could be doing besides selling your body.

GENEVIEVE

There ain’t much out there for a girl and you know it. I mean look at you,
you’re the one playin’ dress up.

LOU

I know plenty of women who have done just fine on their own.

GENEVIEVE

Well, I’m not on my own. I have a little sister to feed, but you wouldn’t
know anything about that.

LOU

Wouldn’t I? I have a little brother and sister.

GENEVIEVE

Where are they?

LOU

When I was 12, I left them behind in an orphanage in St. Jo. I decided I was
going to find a job and take care of them. I was a pretty young girl with no
skills and no smarts, but I was determined to make it for them.

GENEVIEVE

So what happened?

LOU

I ended up doing laundry in an establishment full of other pretty young girls.
Took me almost a year to figure out what kind of place it was. But I hadn’t made
very much money so I figured I would stay and keep saving. Any money was
good. Eventually the owner wanted more from me than just doing laundry and
one night he decided it was time I grew up. After it happened, I had a choice to
make. I could stay and become part of something that made me hate myself or I
could choose to find anything else. I knew it would take me longer to get the
money I needed, but at least I could live with myself.

GENEVIEVE

(slightly agitated)

Your brother and sister are tucked away being taken care of in an orphanage.
Amanda is with me and I’ll do anything to keep her with me and safe.

LOU

Workin’ in a place like that isn’t safe for either one of you. And what if you’re
lucky to keep her from that life, what about you? Don’t you deserve the right to
be happy, too? I know that after it happened I had a hard time looking at myself
without feeling shame. How do you feel when you look in the mirror?

GENEVIEVE

I gave up lookin’ a long time ago.

LOU

Genevieve…

Genevieve interrupts her.

GENEVIEVE

Look Lou, I know you mean well, but I’m not ashamed of taking care
of my family. Please, just drop it.

Both ladies turn their attention to the trail in front of them leaving the conversation left in a very tense silence. The camera pans out from the two of them to the whole group.

19. Int. Station Bunkhouse – Dusk

Teaspoon, The Kid, Noah, Jesse and Rachel are all sitting around the table eating supper.

THE KID

So Teaspoon, where is everyone?

TEASPOON

Jimmy and Lou picked up a young girl who shot a man on their way back.
Posse came looking and I had everyone ride out with them to make sure the
girl got where she needed to go.

THE KID

When are they supposed to get back?

TEASPOON

Couple of days.

NOAH

What about runs?

TEASPOON

Don’t have one scheduled until next week.

THE KID

Well, maybe we could head out with them too, seeing as we don’t have
anything to worry about around here.

RACHEL

You do have chores, remember?

THE KID

(ignoring Rachel)

Why did you need to send everyone?

TEASPOON

Just to make me feel better and give them something to do.

NOAH

I thought you said they were just looking after a young girl?

TEASPOON

They are.

THE KID

Teaspoon, what’s going on?

TEASPOON

Lou took a liking to the girl and wanted to go along. Chores had been caught up
and I figured it would give the boys something to do.

THE KID

Sounds to me like there’s more to it. If you think they might be in danger, I want to go.

TEASPOON

They are just escorting her to Fort Kearney. Nothing to get excited over. Besides, like
Rachel said, there are chores that will need tending to now that you two are here.

THE KID

I still don’t like it.

Teaspoon shrugs as The Kid reluctantly gives in and they all go back to their food.

20. Ext. Main Street Willow Springs – night

We watch as the rider approach the Sheriff’s office. Genevieve is pulled down from her horse and all the riders walk into the office. She is locked away in one of the two cells.

MACKENZIE

She’s safely tucked away for now. You boys can go ahead and get a good
night’s sleep. We’ll be taking her to Ft. Kearney in the morning.

LOU

I’d like to stick around tonight, if you don’t mind.

MACKENZIE

Actually, I do mind. I have to deal with Marshal Hunter’s request for you to come
along, but you are in my town now and I make the rules. Find yourselves hotel rooms
and come back in the morning. I’ll be spending the night here with the prisoner.

The riders reluctantly withdraw. Camera focuses on Lou who turns her attention to Genevieve. Genevieve nods in Lou’s direction. Lou and the rest of the riders exit the office.

21. Int. Sheriff’s office – later that night

Focus in on Genevieve who is looking out. The shot pans wide to reveal Mackenzie staring back at her from his desk.

GENEVIEVE

I know what you’re thinking about.

MACKENZIE

And what’s that?

GENEVIEVE

The last time we were together.

MACKENZIE

You don’t know what you’re talking about, little girl.

GENEVIEVE

Really? I’ve seen the way you’ve been staring at me since Rock Creek.
I know exactly what’s on your mind. Trouble is, come tomorrow you won’t
get to have that anymore. Once I’m at Ft. Kearney, you’ll have to say goodbye.

No response.

GENEVIEVE

I guess that’s your loss.

Mackenzie stands from his chair, grabs the keys and walks to her cell. He unlocks the door and enters the cell. Grabbing both of her arms he pulls her to her feet. He begins kissing her roughly.

GENEVIEVE

Not here.

MACKENZIE

Why not?

GENEVIEVE

You’re takin’ me to hang tomorrow. I don’t think it’ll reflect well on you if
someone catches us, do you?

Mackenzie reluctantly agrees pulling her roughly out of the cell and out the back door.

22. Ext. Behind Sheriff’s office – immediately following

Mackenzie begins roughly kissing Genevieve on the lips and neck. He pushes her to the ground as he places himself on his knees in front of her. From behind his shoulder we see the muzzle of a revolver placed behind his ear. Mackenzie freezes. The camera pulls out showing Lou holding the gun.

LOU

Get up!

MACKENZIE

Are you crazy?

LOU

You better be glad I’m not or I’d have already put a bullet in you.

Cody, Buck and Jimmy enter the scene. Genevieve gets to her feet with Buck’s help. Lou reaches out for Mackenzie but a shot rings out behind her. The scene shifts revealing two posse members shooting at the riders. They all split up, Lou running Genevieve out of firing range as Cody, Buck and Jimmy all return fire. Follow Lou and Genevieve to the awaiting horses.

LOU

Stay here. If anything happens you ride back to Rock Creek as fast as you can.

Genevieve nods as Lou runs back to the shoot out. She meets up with Cody and Buck.

LOU

Where’s Jimmy?

CODY

Not sure. He ran off in the opposite direction.

LOU

I’m gonna go find him. You two head back to the horses. No matter what, we
need to get Genevieve back to Rock Creek.

BUCK

Watch your back.

The two riders cover her as she runs in Jimmy’s direction and as soon as they no longer see her they pull back. Lou tries her best to hide behind any foliage she can find as she screams out for Jimmy. She gets no response. She pulls away from the foliage heading in the direction of Buck and Cody. We see Mackenzie come out from behind the building and aim right for Lou. He fires off two shots, both of which hit her and she falls to the ground.

23. Ext. Horses – seconds later

Buck and Cody make it back to the horses finding both Genevieve and Jimmy waiting.

JIMMY

Where’s Lou?

CODY

She went looking for you.

JIMMY

I’m gonna go get her. Go on ahead. We’ll catch up.

They all nod as Cody, Buck and Genevieve mount their horses and pull away. We follow Jimmy back to behind the Sheriff’s office. The shooting has stopped. Jimmy hides off to the side of the building looking for any sign of Lou. His eye is caught by a figure lying on the ground.

JIMMY

(in a whisper)

Lou?

We see something come down onto Jimmy’s head from behind knocking him unconscious. The camera pulls out revealing Posse Member #2 standing over him. The scene shifts back to an unconscious Lou lying motionless in the grass. The camera pans out showing Mackenzie and another posse member approaching her.

Reflections script - Act 2 (The Young Riders)

2. Ext. Terrain – same time

Scene opens back up to where it left off. The young girl is holding the gun to Jimmy’s back. We then see another revolver come into the picture now pointing at the young girl’s back. She reluctantly un-cocks her gun handing it to whoever is behind her. Pan out to find Lou who has her gun trained on the girl. Jimmy picks up his gun from the ground and now both riders have guns aimed at the girl.

JIMMY

What do you think you’re doing?

The girl gives no response.

LOU

What are you doing here?

No response.

LOU

Did you kill that man?

No response.

JIMMY

She ain’t gonna talk.

LOU

What do we do with her?

JIMMY

Take her to Teaspoon. Let him figure it out.

Jimmy points to his horse.

JIMMY

Get up there.

GIRL

I ain’t goin’ nowhere with you.

JIMMY

Fine, then tell us what happened.

No response.

Jimmy grabs her arm and pushes her toward the horse.

JIMMY

Get up there.

The girl mounts the horse as Jimmy hands his gun out to Lou.

JIMMY

I would rather you hold on to this. Keep it far away from her.

LOU

I think I should ride with her. I might be able to get her to talk.

Jimmy agrees. Lou mounts up behind the girl. Jimmy mounts up on Lou’s horse.

3. Ext. Terrain – 20 minutes later

Jimmy and Lou ride side by side with the girl in front of Lou.

LOU

What’s your name?

No response.

LOU

You know, you can tell us what happened. We aren’t gonna hurt you.

No response.

LOU

How old are you?

No response.

LOU

I’d guess you’re about fourteen.

GIRL

Fifteen.

LOU

That wasn’t so hard. Can you tell me anything else about yourself?

No response.

LOU

If you tell us what happened, we might be able to help. We have a

friend who’s a Marshal.

GIRL

The law ain’t gonna help me. They just use that badge to take

whatever they want.

LOU

Marshal Hunter’s not like that.

The girl doesn’t respond.

Camera pulls back as the riders continue their journey.

4. Int. Marshal’s office – mid-day

Camera pulls back to reveal CODY and BUCK playing checkers at the front table. TEASPOON is in the background sitting at his desk.

CODY

When is everybody supposed to get back? I’m tired of doing

double duties to cover everyone out on runs.

BUCK

And I’m tired of pulling triple duty to cover the chores you

seem to forget.

TEASPOON

Jimmy and Lou’ll be back anytime. Kid and Noah should be

back in a few days. Don’t get so antsy Cody. You two will get

your turns soon enough.

CODY

I don’t get it anyway. Why do we have to do these long runs

and double up no less?

TEASPOON

Well, with Russell, Majors and Waddell closing down smaller

stations we need to cover longer distances and with the war coming,

they just figure it’s safer having two guns rather than one. Besides,

with the rides dwindling off, they could just as soon fire half of you

and not have to pay for the doubling up.

CODY

That’s fine. I’ll just pursue my dreams of being a famous actor while

my good looks are still in demand.

BUCK

Please, go pursue that dream. It would make our lives a whole lot easier.

5. Ext. Marshals office – same time

Jimmy, Lou and the girl arrive in front of the office. Jimmy dismounts first tying up his and Lou’s horse. The girl dismounts and Jimmy grabs her arm. Lou dismounts. All three head into the office.

TEASPOON

Who’s this?

JIMMY

We’re not sure. She ain’t talkin.

LOU

Found her a few miles outside of town.

JIMMY

And the dead body of a sheriff not too far from her.

TEASPOON

(to the girl)

You have something to do with that?

No response.

TEASPOON

Well, seems I got no choice, but to lock you up until I get some answers.

Teaspoon grabs the girl’s arm escorting her to one of the cells and locking the door.

TEASPOON (cont.)

Jimmy, you get a fresh horse and meet us back here. I need to get a

look at that body. Buck, you come too. Take a look around and see

what you think. Lou, you and Cody stick around here, may she’ll

get friendly enough to start talking.

Lou and Cody take a seat in the office as the other three make their way out.

6. Int. Bunk house – night

Scene opens with close up on Lou as she pushes her food around her plate. We pull out to reveal all the riders, JESSE and RACHEL around the table eating supper.

TEASPOON

Get anything else out of her?

Lou shakes her head.

CODY

That is one tough girl. She wouldn’t budge.

BUCK

There was obviously a struggle, but that’s about all I could tell.

JIMMY

My guess is he wouldn’t pay up so she killed him. End of story.

LOU

You think that girl could kill a man because he stiffed her?

JIMMY

Why else would she shoot him?

LOU

Maybe she was defending herself.

JIMMY

Come on, Lou. It’s obvious she ain’t innocent of anything. Girls like

her can be about as deadly as any man when it comes to being wronged.

LOU

It bother you that she’s only fifteen?

JIMMY

I’ve seen them younger.

LOU

And that makes it alright? And because she’s not talking she must

have killed him because he wouldn’t pay up? Never even crossed

your mind that maybe he deserved it? Why; because he has a badge?

You know as well as I do that a badge doesn’t give you the right to

use and throw away women. But since she’s a saloon girl she must

be askin’ for it, right?

Lou pushes her plate away and exits out the front door.

JIMMY

That’s not what I meant.

RACHEL

We know what you meant.

All eyes scan Jimmy and Rachel then back to their meals.
